What is the Longevity of a Paint Job?

The barn in the top picture has smiled at Burlington for 35 years. The picture was taken when the paint job was 25 years old. The building in the foreground of the picture was painted by another contractor 15 years after I painted the "Smiley" barn. Note the peel of that 10-year-old "quickie" paint job. (By the way, I like putting smiles on barns — they turn into landmarks.)

The second and third pictures show barns that have paint jobs that are between 20 and 25 years old. The bottom three are more than 15 years old.

The key to long life is to sandblast to thoroughly remove loose paint and back-roll to make sure you get a good seal on the wood.
